Hello! We are Heather, Steve, and Ben. Thank you for taking the time to get to know us a little bit. We have been together for over 20 years and have been married for 16 years. We welcomed Ben into our hearts and home in 2017 thanks to adoption through AOW. We are so excited about the possibility of adding another child and even more love to our family and we look forward to seeing our son grow and develop even more as a big brother. We also currently have 3 cats as part of our family. 2 of our cats are seniors that we have had since 2003 and 2005 and our third cat is a kitten that we added to our family last year. We used to have 2 beautiful dogs, but we sadly lost them both to old age and cancer within the last year. We hope to possibly add another dog to our family in the near future. We are definitely animal lovers that value teaching our children how to care for and show compassion to animals.
Becoming parents to Ben has been the most rewarding and exciting adventure that the 2 of us has taken together so far. Heather is currently a stay at home Mom with Ben, but before that she was a daycare teacher for many years with a background in early childhood education. Steve works for a scientific software company and spends most of his day working at a computer. Heather loves to do lots of fun activities at home with Ben, including messy art projects, sensory play with slime, water, rice, and sand, and going to our local playgroup. We both love attending Ben's weekly swimming class and being amazed by how far he's come in a little over a year of being in the water. The school only allows 1 parent in the pool at a time so this is usually a special activity that Ben and Steve share since Heather and Ben get to spend so much other time together. As a family on the weekends we like to spend time with our extended families, many of whom live in the Milwaukee area, but when we're not doing that we like to go to fun places such as the Children's Museum in Madison, the Farmer's Market, Eugster's Farm, the Zoo, and the outdoor swimming pool or the lake in the summer. Heather's family also has a cabin in Northern Wisconsin that we usually spend a couple weekends a summer at. We love experiencing new things through Ben's eyes and we're always on the lookout for fun new places to visit in the area.
Our relationship with Ben's first (birth) Mom has been a wonderful gift to all of us. We have visits with her regularly and we exchange texts and photos with her often. She has been able to join us on many of the fun adventures that we mentioned experiencing with Ben, which makes the day even more enjoyable and special. We consider her a member of our family and we are so grateful that she chooses to spend time with us and help us celebrate many of Ben's big milestones. If you choose to make an adoption plan for your child and you were considering us as parents we would hope that you would want to continue having contact with us and your child as well. Two things that we wholeheartedly believe in are that there can never be too many people to love and support a child and that we will never make promises to you regarding contact with us that we are not willing or able to keep. Of course, if having contact is not something that you are comfortable with then we will be respectful of your wishes and we will follow your lead in terms of how much openness is included in the adoption plan. We understand that you are likely making the most difficult decision of your life and that this time is filled with a lot of uncertainty, so we appreciate you taking the time to consider us while you decide what is best for you and your child. We wish you nothing but the best no matter what decision you make.
